School meal prices will increase for the 2012-2013 school year due to the Federal Regulations of the 2010 Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act: Equity in School Lunch Pricing (Section 205). The act requires school systems to ensure that sufficient funds are provided to the food service accounts for paid lunches. School systems across the nation had to analyze their meal prices and make changes to meet the ranges set by the regulations.
The new meal prices are:
- Student Breakfast: $1.10
- Elementary School Student Lunch: $1.85
- Middle School Student Lunch: $2.10
The Griffin-Spalding County School System increased individual meal prices by only $0.10, compared to some school systems which saw increases of $0.25- $0.75 per meal.
All school systems will be required to annually review meal prices to determine if increases are required.
