"The highlight of my teaching career was this past year’s graduation. As I sat watching more than half of my at-risk students march across that stage with a high school diploma, not a certificate of completion, but a high school diploma, I was moved to tears at the memory of each of them on their first day in my class, full of personality and attitude. Being a self-proclaimed love and logic teacher, I think back to how, by encouraging them to develop a sense of self-worth, those students begin to believe in themselves. By their senior year, most were still struggling to pass one or two sections of the graduation test; passing the test became their struggle and not whether or not to drop out of school. Probably, for the first time in their lives, those students were in battle with something that each of them could control and many fought for it and the end result was beautiful.” - Cheryl Clark, Griffin-Spalding Teacher of the Year" |
