Orrs’ fifth graders in Ms. Ivey’s social studies classes completed a unit on Immigration by presenting these projects. Students worked in groups to research how immigrants helped to impact American culture in the areas of food, music, holiday traditions, and more. They used class computers and laptops, as well as reference books, to find information and pictures. They also created graphs with Microsoft Excel and included maps on their posters. The classes enjoyed working cooperatively and were very proud of their finished products. Here, Nova Barcus & Jimmy Jarvis work on their poster together.

Students in Miss Katie McKinney’s second grade class take part in a money learning station as they learn how to count money and make change. Students served as cashiers and customers as they were able to “buy” many different items at the money station by counting out the money and making the correct change. Givin Ogletree and Madison Smallwood try to decide how much money they owe, while Tyler Hunt and Savannah Fritz play “cashier”.

Students in Miss Katie McKinney’s second grade class participated in Johnny Appleseed Day by observing the effects that air has on apples that are cut open. Students were able to be second grade “scientists” as they learned the scientific process. Students observed the reaction of an apple that was cut and an apple that had lemon juice on it. They made predictions and drew models of the apples after they performed the experiment. After the experiment, students reflected on their predictions and the experiment. Students were then able to make an apple smile as they enjoyed the science lesson. Givin Ogletree and Austin Salembier observe the changes in their apple and document the changes on their log sheets.

5th graders at Orrs Elementary School recently completed demonstration projects for 4-H. Each student had the task of selecting and researching a topic of interest. They created posters and gave short speeches to teach classmates about what they had learned regarding their topic. Some students will compete in the 4-H County Project Achievement contest in March. Maggie Pope, a student in Ms. Lori Ivey’s class, did her project on nutrition. She brought in examples of good and bad nutrition to help students see what they should and shouldn’t be eating.
